Welcome! My name is Lawrence J. Sylvain. I'm a senior software engineer with over 25 years of experience. That's my cat Toonces on the stamp above :). My most current resume can be downloaded by clicking one of the above links. It is available in Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, Rich Text, Open Office and plain text formats. The Adobe format provides the best print quality should you want to pass a hard-copy through the office mill. I don't spend a lot of time working on this page - mainly because I'm more occupied with delivering solutions for my customers.
Over the years I've developed a lot of solutions using leading edge technologies, including cloud deployments, virtualization (VMs), Java and OpenSource technologies. I've also done my share of work using Microsoft technologies and can hold my own there, but I do not emphasize that technology space beyond the fact that the solutions I deliver readily integrate and interoperate with Microsoft technologies.
I can work in developer and mentor, agile lead and architect roles, and I frequently wear all of those hats. I know the entire cradle-to-grave product lifecycle on all tiers, from conception and proof-of-concept to architecture, prototyping, design, development, integration, testing, deployment, support and enhancement.
My general strategy is to create agile and reusable cross-platform frameworks that can be leveraged to deliver integrated solutions that require minimum cost to support and enhance. I can also migrate legacy systems to modern technologies or provide adapters so those systems can integrate and inter-operate with modern solutions. I was on the ground floor of the service-oriented movement years ago and have been using SOA techniques for well over twenty years. This has made the transition to cloud, infrastructure-as-a-service (Iaas) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) paradigms an exciting experience for me.
I am currently the Lead Software Systems Engineer for a government contractor. During 2014 I built a software development group from the ground up. We are nearing the end of the first phase of a system that uses about every cool and new technology you can think of such as virtualization, cloud deployment, system and service discovery, a dynamic RESTful services container, a NoSQL-based persistence service that supports virtually any type of data, a thin client visualization tool that can run on virtually any platform, and a few things I am keeping secret for the time being.
In my last job the end of 2013 saw delivery of a remote operations system that aggregates MULTI-INT and streaming data from manned and un-manned sensors, making it available via a set of open-standards-based APIs to support situational awareness and data correlation solutions.
Prior to that job I designed and developed an award-winning framework for US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that makes extensive use of XML and XSL technologies. The framework was built to be used by web developers with little or no Java skills so they can rapidly build-out and extend dynamic n-tier web sites.
I have a TS/SCI clearance that was last adjudicated in September, 2012 and is valid until September, 2017.
Thanks again for visting! I leave you with my favorite blessing. It is my favorite because it was taught by God himself to Moses:
Below you will find schedules, maps and other commuter information for Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virgina along with a few extras. You may want to take a break and play the "Mind Reader" game (can you figure out how I do it?), or maybe play a video short or catch up with Dilbert...
